Just a short one for you today. Domino on Windows 2008...

Q: What versions are supported?
A: 8.5 and upwards

Q: What versions will work?
A: Probably most of them really (DON'T quote me on that!)

Q: Why can't I see the Domino console anymore?
A: Why do you need to? Surely you're not still working on the server are you?
A2: Because Win2008 doesn't let services interact with the console anymore. You should be using the Java Server Console.

Q: What's the Java server console?
A: A server console running as a Java app Just add "-jc c" to the end of the registry key for the Domino service (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lotus Domino Server) after the current two quoted sections. Try it, it's cool.

Q: I still get all sorts of nasty Windows service messages (pre-Domino 8.5)
A: Uncheck 'Allow service to interact with the Desktop' from the service properties
A2: Use Linux.

<Updated>
Q: OK, did all that - why won't the fixpack install?
A: It needs the .NET 1.1 framework to be installed. That's not installed in Windows 2008. Find MSVCR71.dll from somewhere and copy it to the directory the fixpack installer is running from. Then it still won't work! I'm guessing Windows file protection and will update this if/when I find a fix.

Moral of the day, girls and boys, stick to supported configs!

Just a very quick post to confirm that yes, I did arrive home - 5 days and 18hrs late, after 55hrs and 47minutes of travelling :(

I'm currently back in London having given our Admin workshop course yesterday and spent today looking at some interesting global email issues for a customer. More when things slow down!

We have a plan!

So, for those keenly following our movements (if anyone!).. we have a plan.

8:30 Sunday - meet our impromptu passenger at the hotel (stranded since Thursday like us)
...Drive the 10 hours to Brussels
19:00 Drop off the car at Avis,
Sunday night - Stay in Brussels
18:15 Monday - Train to Paris
20:30 Monday - Train to London
Monday night - stay with friends near London
10:00 Tuesday - Train to Edinburgh

So, from now - 62hrs of travel. Very shitty, but all the indications from here are that the delays in Denmark are just going to roll on and on. We've hearing that BA will need 24hrs before they can start working on the backlog - AFTER the restrictions at both ends lift. Add in the people delayed before us who will need to be moved first - flights may not be until the end of next week. So the cost of travel starts to look sensible compared to the cost of staying here in a hotel.

Expect lots of twitter updates at www.twitter.com/warrenelsmore over the next few days. "Loaded up and truckin'...."

Still stranded in Denmark

Well, I'm still here - and will be for a while. My flight (originally cancelled from Thursday) is now scheduled for Tuesday. To be honest, I'm not confident that it will actually take off!

Thanks for all the suggestions of travel methods! None are looking that good though unfortunately. Matt and I returned back to Copenhagen last night in a hope our flights would happen today, but they're both been cancelled again. We're staying in the Radisson in Copenhagen and we extended our stays at 9pm last night until at least Monday. From the sounds of it, our hotel is pretty much full.

- The hired Fiat 500 is still here, in the hotel car park. That should gone back to Copenhagen airport Avis last night, but they're closed and I can't reach either the branch of the main UK number to ask them what to do about it! At last count, driving it back to Brussels would be GBP500-GBP1000 one-way hire charge, plus 1000 miles in the smallest car in the world. Not a good choice and considering how tired I am already, it would totally scupper next weeks plans.
- Training it back might be possible if there are any tickets available. Would take 24hrs, but at least we won't be driving. Amex travel services are looking into that one, they have 'quite a long list' of people wanting train bookings so have dedicated a person to make those calls. We should hear in a couple of hours.
- Ferries are all pretty much sold out. I did get an offer from friends in Billund to take me back to Zebrugge tonight, then on the overnight to Hull for Monday am. I'm not very confident of getting on as a foot passenger though. Esjberg ferries sail on Thursday (which was looking like a long time ago - not so much now...), most of the others we can't actually get to unless we take the car (see above!)
- Or, we just wait it out. Copenhagen isn't a bad place to wait, and the hotel room is nice - if small. There's even a LEGO show on this weekend from the local club. My main concern though, is what if we wait it out - and still don't fly on Tuesday?

More updates when I get them, I guess!

Stranded in Denmark

So, a big Icelandic Volcano goes off - and I'm meant to be flying back to Scotland. Nope, that ain't happening!

As of Thursday, both Matt and I's flights were re-booked to Saturday lunchtime. So, with a day spare in Denmark, you know I had to go to LEGO! Matt was actually very kind indeed to go with my mad plan, so we drove over what is quite possibly the longest bridge in the universe and onto Billund. As it turned out when we arrived here and I hooked up with a couple of friends of mine, we're not the only ones.

So, whilst Matt caught up on some work, I spent the evening with a whole bunch of LEGO related people, stranded in Billund. For those of you in the states, that included Sean Kenny and Adam Reed Tucker. Very cool guys and a very nice night out. Of course, this isn't helping the whole 'stranded' question.

With a laptop to hand, we've been keeping tabs on what is happening. Currently (16th April, 08:08 CET) we know that:
- Our flights are scheduled for 13:00 tomorrow
- UK airspace is closed until at least 7pm today
- Danish airspace is still closed
- Driving the hire car to Brussels for the Eurostar would cost GBP500 in a one-way fee
- The train from Copenhagen to London would take 20hrs
- The train from Hamburg would be 9
- There are no ferry slots avail from Denmark for another week
- oh, and did I mention that I'd *really* like to get home to see my wife?

At least I'm relatively close and land transport is an option I guess. All the US guys here are truely stranded at the moment, as is Nicholas Foo from Singapore. So what next? Well, we have a possible lift to Rotterdam and then Hull on Sunday, or we can try for the flights tomorrow. Personally, I don't think it looks good With 2 flights currently booked for next week, that could be interesting too.....

DanNOTES

After a couple of days working in Copenhagen this week, I drove back to the airport (via the city center - BAD Garmin!) to pick up Matt White. Why? Because we were both invited to speak at the DanNOTES conference over the next couple of days. As Matt said on the way, 'it's great to be able to visit all these other user groups and steal their ideas', which is, in some ways, very true!

In fact, I've nothing bad to say abut DanNOTES at all, I had a really good time - and learnt alot myself as well. The format of the day is similar to many other events, except that Matt and I took the Admin/Dev tracks to ourselves and delivered 3hr of content each. Not having any 3hr long sessions, I delivered AdminBlast, the Lowdown on LDAP, and a new Directory Integration session. I think I didn't scare people too much - we shall see! The Directory Integration session actually threw up an idea that is quite possibly one of the coolest ideas I've ever seen. More of that soon!

Of course, on the second day I come down after breakfast (possibly with a slight hangover) to hear that my flight is cancelled due to a Volcano. Once I realised it wasn't a wind-up, then we got onto the next blog post....

A note of caution on iPhone OS4?

Category

I watched the liveblog last night on the iPhone OS4 launch. Kitty's pretty happy with multitasking support, which doesn't surprise me as that alone drives me bonkers when I use her iPhone.

Anyway, my potential note of caution. iPhone OS4 will support multiple ActiveSync accounts - but I've not read anywhere this is for anything other than just mail. So, if you're using Traveler to sync an iPhone, and also sync with gmail - what happens to your contacts and calendar entries? Are they shared/duplicated/blitzed?

Also, if you can background and app, but not close them - how does the iPhone cope with multiple backgrounded notifications? For example, what happens if I run 10 Twitter apps that notify me each time I get a tweet? Do I get inundated with notifications until I power the thing off? I'm not saying anything else is better - just that at least on most other platforms I can kill the app.

Yours, expectantly looking for an answer, a non-iPhone user :)

Note to self: don't say 'will try to blog...' - Thanks for BLUG!

Because you know you just won't!

This is far too late, but my heartfelt thanks to Theo for organising BLUG last week. Even though I spectacularly failed to blog at all, I did have a great time and felt very well looked after indeed. In my humble defence, the sore throat that I had prior to BLUG turned into a grotty cold over the Easter weekend. So after sniffling my way through a meeting last Wednesday - I consigned myself to the sofa until yesterday morning. Boo.

Of course, after sampling some great Belgian beers last week I - yet again - realised just how bad my language skills are. Even early in the morning, Theo (Belgian), Ulrich (German) and numerous other people (not English) were still able to hold a good conversation with me in English. My Flemish/German/French/etc - still terrible. The sad thing is though, that my language skills are pretty average for the British. As much as I appreciate everyone elses' ability to speak English fluently, I don't think I'll ever find it 'right' that I'm not speaking the local language. Note to self - improve on this!

In other news, however:
- Eurostar really is the easiest way from London to the continent. Wondering if you can train it to Denmark....
- Amex Platinum card is ACE. Used the lounge access far too many times already. Why didn't I do this 10 years ago?
- Testing 8.5.2 broke my full text search (we do these things so you don't have to!) and also my bookmarks.nsf apparently. Queue rebuild...
- Eileen is a great co-presenter
- ILUG 2010 registration is open!

As I pointed out earlier, UKLUG is taking a rest this year - two large events in one year is just too much for us I'm afraid (unless anyone wants to actually pay my salary to do it...). So in 2010 ILUG is the focus. That means more of the usual and more fast selling out conferences. So, if you haven't already, head over to www.ilug2010.org and check out the details. You know you want too...
