Blimey, Sun servers are cheap!

If you've been on the UKLUG site recently, you might have noticed it's a little bit slow sometimes. Sorry about that. Sake (the server) is feeling a bit under the weather. It's a combination of Domino, XPages, Traveler, every-thing-we-run, far too many websites and not enough hardware. We're writing a worst practice right here

Anyway - that got me thinking about hardware, because that server could really do with a boost. Dan (a Bluewave guy) was talking to me about Sun servers over lunch, so I thought for a laugh I'd take a look at the specs. They *do* seem pretty cheap:

2 x AMD 2380 2.5 GHz Quad Core Processor
4 x 2 GB
4 x 146 GB 10k SAS drives
DVD/Ethernet/5 USB/ 2 PSU's/Complete remote management*
3 year next day warranty

*- ie COMPLETE KVM support down to a BIOS level. Essential seeing as our datacenter is 200 miles away from me!

All for the princely sum of : GBP2880!! Load up VMWare ESXi on that (being certified right now) and think of the possibilities! We'd easily get 4-6 production machines on that. Oh, and did I mention it's a 1U server and draws about 280W of power and would still have 4 disk slots free?

...Now, where can I get 3 grand from?

Gravatar Image1 - Sure, the Intels are cheap. I've got T2000s, which run upwards of US$50,000, though to stay in perspective, they replaced 2001-vintage 6500-series beasts that were over $250,000 each.

Have you looked down the back of the sofa? That's what I do…
