Alliance and Leicester are the worlds' worst bank

Yes - that is a headline designed to grab google ratings.

Running UKLUG is hard enough at some times. But it gets silly once banks start messing you around. As you can probably guess, we have a number of international sponsors and UK sponsors, contributing to make UKLUG happen by cheque, bank transfer, CHAPS, BACS, wire, etc etc. All of our sponsors have been kind enough to pay us. Or at least try to....

Currently, the Alliance and Leicester have managed to loose 1 international CHAPS transfer. It's been paid to them - but it's not in my account. The international team are telling me there is no way at all they can trace this. I don't believe them.

You'd think that was bad enough, but they have also managed to loose 2 cheques that we've paid it. Strangely, it isn't the A&L's strange cheque paying in procedure. Do you go to a branch and do it over the counter? No, you put them in an envelope, with nothing else enclosed, and hand it over at a post office. Seriously. I queried this twice, to 2 separate people - that's what you're meant to do. So, they've managed to loose these 2 cheques as well. I know they have been paid in - the senders can confirm that - but they aren't in my account.

So, seriously - could a bank be any worse? OK, I'll admit that things going wrong happens every so often, but it's the complete refusal to do ANYTHING about it that is infuriating me. What am I supposed to do? I've now logged an official complaint with the bank (not that I expect that to go anywhere), and I'll keep harassing them. Perhaps I could charge A&L for my time???

Gravatar Image1 - You could always escalate through the Banking Ombudsman: { Link }

They may be able to push things along further for you.

It is a shame that this has happened especially after all the hard work that was put in to UKLUG

Gravatar Image3 - You cant go to ombudsman without completin internal complaints procedure first, usually takes a couple of months top. The Post Ofice thing by the way looks like whoever you are speaking to is giving you bad advice. You should have some cheque deposit slip thingy to put in the envelope otherwise the cheques can't be tied to any account???? I had problems with a chaps with another bank and in truth they said the same and to be tru if they haven't received it how can they find it??? You really do neet to get sending bank to give you absolute proof of where sent and provide this to Alliance

Gravatar Image4 - Sadly, I have the honour of having worked for them when my father was a Senior Manager there [and completed 24 years service]. When I returned to Leicester to study for an MBA, I decided to re-use and existing dormant account and was informed that the account does not exist [despite my records showing £12 interest owing to the contrary] and there was no record of my having ever worked for the company.
Go figure that out!
