That Lotusphere justification document I mentioned

Paul just prompted me to publish this - sorry, it's well overdue. This attached PDF is a verbatim copy of a document I wrote in 2005, which justified the attendance of myself and a colleague to go to Lotusphere. This was updated from a similar document in 2004.

Back in the dark ages, although I was 'chief techie' of the Notes team for a pan-European systems integrator, I still had to justify the cost. So I wrote this. Some of the details have aged, but not very many. The prices are still pretty similar too. In fact, if you want one recommendation from me - argue the point on price. Hotel+flights+entry = £2500. One weeks training course in London could well cost you the same. Which do you think you'll get more value from?

And if you need more reasons to go - think of this. When that systems integrator decided to close down their Notes practice, I put my hand in my own pocket and paid that £2500 myself (remember, I now had no job). What happened? I talked to other BP's, we started BE, and 3 years later  we're pretty happy with the progress And I'm not the only person who's done that successfully either.

Gravatar Image1 - i am new at the whole notes comunity thing, but will be going this year (paying for it myself) as even after going to the newly start uk usergroup, the payback is far more than the payout. so cant imagine what lotusphere will be like

Gravatar Image2 - Just to back you up Warren. I'm an independent developer and I pay for myself to go every year. It more than pays back through either direct or indirect routes.

It's the one thing I can guarantee I'll invest in every year.

Gravatar Image3 - I completely agree with you guys even though I have never attended Lotusphere (yet!). I am a sole contractor who currently has a boss that no amount of well thought out justifications will lead to them signing off the cost of the experience - THE WIFE!!!

I hope to attend from 2009 onwards. Being a contractor who has never really struggled to get work, I really now understand from these postings (and on Paul's site) that it can be taken up a level in terms of knowledge, experience, visibility and without sounding gushing, friendships with people with a common passion.

Gravatar Image4 - and ironically whilst working for the same systems integrator I have been offered a free ticket to Lotusphere and still chose to resign...
